FUPI UIN Sunan Kalijaga Strengthens Strategic Indonesia–EU 2025 Collaboration in Interfaith Dialogue for Tolerance, Environment, and Gender Equality

FUPI’s Central Role in Interfaith Dialogue

As a faculty focusing on religious studies, philosophy, and Islamic thought, FUPI UIN Sunan Kalijaga plays a highly relevant role in the interfaith discussions at the heart of this event. The Dean of FUPI, Prof. Dr. Robby Habiba Abror, noted that this international forum serves as a strategic space for the faculty to expand its academic network and deepen the scholarly development of its students.

FUPI students, particularly at the master's level, played an active role in the panel discussion sessions, which addressed three main focuses:

  • Peaceful Interfaith Coexistence,

  • The Role of Religious Figures in Environmental Preservation,

  • Religion as a Driver of Gender Equality.

The direct involvement of students in discussions with international religious figures and academics represents a concrete implementation of the FUPI curriculum, which emphasizes strengthening interfaith dialogue literacy and sensitivity toward global issues.

UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s Institutional Commitment

In his remarks, the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Dr. Noorhaidi Hasan, emphasized that this event aligns with the campus's intellectual character, which prioritizes moderation, openness, and dialogue. These values serve as the primary foundation for FUPI in developing Ushuluddin and Islamic thought studies that are inclusive and relevant to contemporary challenges.

“Interfaith and intercultural dialogue is part of the scientific DNA of UIN Sunan Kalijaga,” stated Prof. Noorhaidi. “The Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Thought serves as an important pillar in realizing an academic space open to the meeting of ideas and peaceful paths across faiths.”

FUPI as an Academic Representation of Moderation and Dialogue

FUPI’s participation in this forum not only demonstrates the faculty's commitment to global issues such as pluralism, social justice, and environmental sustainability but also reaffirms its position as a center for religious studies actively involved in cultural diplomacy and inter-civilizational dialogue.

Through the presence of students and lecturers in this international forum, FUPI reaffirms its academic mission to:

  • internalize the values of religious moderation,

  • develop research-based interfaith studies,

  • and strengthen global networks that support the creation of an inclusive and civilized society.

Strengthening Networks and Global Agendas

The 2025 Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue is a continuation of similar forums last held in 2012 and was reinforced this year as a follow-up to the 2024 EU–Indonesia Human Rights Dialogue. FUPI views its involvement in such forums as part of its moral and academic responsibility to strengthen spaces for interfaith encounters at both national and global levels.

Through this participation, the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Thought hopes to continue producing scholars and intellectuals capable of serving as bridges for dialogue, agents of peace, and thinkers sensitive to humanitarian issues across regions and cultures.

The Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Thought at UIN Sunan Kalijaga remains committed to being a center for religious studies that advances dialogue, diversity, and universal human values, supporting the creation of a more peaceful and civilized world.
